Above are some samples of humans. They hold no high status in this world - they are essentially the part of the populace constantly at odds with the rest of the denizens of Innistrad. They are the prey species - the wildebeests, if you will. But they aren't push overs. However crude and utilitarian their clothes, armor, and weapons are, they've got spirit!
Oh man, working on the blue-aligned alchemist humans were fun! I unfortunately didn't get a chance to do up one in a final illustration but at least I got to dabble a bit at this stage.
The vampires are the uppity, fancy-clothes-wearing, nobility of the realm. One of their unifying visual cues was wrought iron design work and filigree worked into both clothing and weapons.
Here's another vampy dame - a cleric. probably blessing a keg of blood at a sweet vampire frat-party.
If you dig this Innistrad stuff, be sure to slide your internet butt on over to my Art-Blog and see some of the fully painted work I did for set. Fun stuff indeed!
Vampires are so overdone, but you guys did a great job making them new and interesting. I really appreciated the great designs while working on that set.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mr. Stewart about your vampires. At point in pop culture where we've reached a near oversaturation of bloodsuckers, you managed to bring an interesting element to their design. They kind of remind me of the costumes from Coppola's Dracula from the 90s.
ReplyDeleteI agree, you guys really breathed new life into some age old and sometimes tired concepts and tropes. I really like the alchemists. Beautiful designs Steve!
ReplyDeleteIt helped putting the vampires in a semi-anachronistic historical setting a bit. I think a lot of the vampire over-saturation is mainly contemporary worlds which, indeed, is way overplayed and way boring. This kind of setting seems much more natural for mystical bloodsuckers - more opportunity to make them kinda cool.
ReplyDeleteVinod- I wish I had the rest of the alchemist drawings I did! I think there are maybe 5 or 6 more drawings that are pretty fun - I haven't had those sent back to me just yet.
